Sankri village is located 10 hours (193 km) from Dehradun, and the trek from there is approximately 23 km. If you start this trek from Sankri, you can climb 3-4 km to Kedarkantha in one go, then rest for a bit at night and resume your trek the next day.
Kedarkantha means the throat of Lord Shiva. Kedarkantha is famous for many stories. The people of Kedarkantha worship Lord Shiva because they believe that by worshipping him, Lord Shiva protects their rivers, ponds, animals, etc., as all these things are important for their lives. According to ancient stories, when the Pandavas won the Mahabharata war, they headed towards the Himalayas to seek Lord Shiva's blessings, as Shiva lived there at that time. But Lord Shiva did not want to meet the Pandavas. Therefore, Lord Shiva took the form of a buffalo so that the Pandavas would not recognize him. Bhima then devised a plan to observe the herd of buffaloes. He stood with his legs spread on the rocks. All the buffaloes began to pass beneath him, except for one, which was Lord Shiva. Seeing this, Bhima began fighting the buffalo and tossing pieces of the buffalo into the air. The Pandavas worshipped the places where the pieces fell and built a Shiva temple. One of the pieces fell in Kedarkantha, where the Kedarnath temple was to be built. Construction of the temple had begun, and Lord Shiva was engrossed in meditation when suddenly a cow came and started making noise. Fearing a disturbance, Lord Shiva left the site and settled in Kedarnath. The idol of Lord Shiva was carved up to his neck, which is why this place is known as Kedarkantha today. The idol of Lord Shiva was carved only up to the neck, and is worshipped here. The upper portion was left unfinished.
